Abstract

In the Law of Guidelines and Bases – LDB, religious education appears explicitly as an integral part of the basic education of citizens. In the National Common Curricular Base – BNCC, it is one of the curricular components of basic education that seeks to build, through the study of religious knowledge and philosophies of life, attitudes of recognition and respect for otherness. In the São Paulo Curriculum, religious education is proposed based on social, cultural, political, psychological, philosophical and ethical elements. The legislation of this state recognizes the significant role that religions play in social and political life, since they are present and directly interfere in the dynamics of social, educational, political spaces and cultural expressions, which directly affects people and organizations in society. In this work, we focused on describing religious education in schools in Brazilian legislation, specifically in the State of São Paulo, as one of the components of basic education that aims to contribute to the integral education of citizens and epistemological autonomy, in relation to religious knowledge, being one of the curricular components of basic education.
