Abstract

This brief article examines the ideological clash between the Catholic Church and liberal forces in the education system of the Brazilian Republic. The Catholic Church sought to influence the educational system with its religious values, while liberals advocated for a secular model, separated from religion. The Church endeavored to maintain its political and social influence through education, supporting the presence of Christian-Catholic values in educational institutions. Conversely, liberals fought for a secular education, detached from religious proselytism, and focused on moral and cultural issues. Throughout this period, the Church oscillated between aligning with and distancing from power, yet consistently retained influence despite conflicts with the secular state. Although education remained secular, Catholic values persisted in certain practices and symbols. The article highlights various moments of this ideological confrontation in shaping Brazil's republican education, delving into the strategies employed by opposing groups in defining the country's educational model.
