Abstract

This article approaches the complex relationship between fundamentalism explored by writer Karen Armstrong and evangelicalism in Latin America, emphasizing the influence of Catholicism and the puritanism of North American Protestantism. Using authors such as Francisco Cartaxo Rolim and Roseli Fischmann, it addresses the historical trajectory of Protestantism, its theological and political polarizations, and the tensions between evangelization and social responsibility. Explores the emergence of the Christian Right, its connections with neoliberalism, and the use of religious speech to justify political agendas. It also analyzes the role of fundamentalism as a countercultural agent and its global expansion, highlighting  resistance to ecumenism and the defense of a conservative theology.
