Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Protestantism and politics in Brazil, exploring the historical trajectory and contemporary implications of this interaction. Initially, it analyzes the ideas of Rubem Alves and Paul Tillich regarding the "Protestant principle" and its critical capacity. Subsequently, it discusses the transformation of Brazilian Protestantism into a dogmatic and conservative force, especially after the civil-military coup of 1964. Finally, it assesses the political impact of evangelical churches and the rise of religious fundamentalism, highlighting the challenges to democracy and the secular nature of the state. The results suggest a significant evolution of Brazilian Protestantism, with important implications for public debate and democratic governance. The article aims to inspire future research to explore the diverse Protestant currents and ways to recover its critical role in society.
