Abstract

Corinth arose around the Pirene fountain and its development is mainly due to its geographical location. With the two ports, Concreia and Lachaeus, connected by the Diolkos, Corinth paved a trackway connecting the Aegean Sea with the Gulf of Corinth. It had two major periods of development: the classical Greek period, when the construction of the great monuments began, and the Roman period, when the city reached the height of its development. The latter was the period in which Paul lived in the city and formed a Christian community there. Parallel to the lower city, developed also the Acrocorinth, whose main function was that of a military fortress.
