CONSOLATIONS IN THE FACE OF SUFFERING

Abstract

This article explores human suffering through the lens of Luther's concept of anfechtung. The main objective is to shed light on the meaning of suffering for Luther, particularly as presented in the Fourteen Consolations. The research aims to answer how Luther's teachings on suffering can be updated and made relevant today. To achieve this, the study reviews Luther's writings on the topic and engages with his key commentators. This is an exploratory study utilizing bibliographic research methods. The findings reveal that Luther's concept of anfechtung is multifaceted, describing the Christian life as a period of trial by Satan. Anfechtung is a defining mark of the Christian, fostering a sense of unity among all Christians and with Christ.
